Jennifer Sklar, LGPC

Practicing Since: 2004

Jennifer’s goal as a therapist is to support her clients in achieving a greater sense of peace and balance in their lives. She endeavors to help her clients understand that, while we cannot always control what happens to us or how other people interact with us, we do have a significant amount of control over how we process those situations and the emotions we experience. We cannot get away from negative emotions nor should we try to because feelings like anxiety, disappointment, sadness, and fear are instructive in many ways. We can, however, come to a place where we manage our feelings through how we frame our day to day happenings so that even during our most challenging moments our focus is on hope, optimism, gratitude, and joy. In counseling, Jennifer employs an eclectic approach that incorporates a strength-based focus, strategies to promote mindfulness, a rational-emotive philosophy, and a cognitive-behavioral framework.

Jennifer began her graduate career with a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology with Clinical Option from Loyola College before earning a Certificate of Advanced Study in School Psychology from Towson University. She entered private practice and recently achieved LGPC credentials. Jennifer continues to work toward LCPC credentials while continuing full-time employment as a school psychologist. In addition to supporting a range of mental health concerns, a particular area of clinical focus for Jennifer is supporting individuals with autism spectrum disorder. What she appreciates most about working with clients is seeing how changes in thinking lead to a better emotional experience, a greater sense of self-determination, and a focus on gratitude, resilience, and positivity.

Jennifer is licensed in the state of Maryland (#LC13882).
