Megan Thurkins, MA, Resident in Counseling

Practicing Since: 2019

We all carry stories within ourselves, some that are life-giving, some that can hurt. Who we are is complex, made up of inner narratives and experiences that can be challenging to untangle. Many times, clients decide to engage in therapy in the hopes of disentangling these stories, healing wounded parts, and building new selves.

Having experienced healing in past therapy herself, Megan’s deep desire is to collaborate with clients in their own journey of healing, creating a supportive environment where they can feel safe to be their real selves. Her philosophy is that therapists are always guests in the client’s inner “home,” and that learning about clients’ inner worlds is an honor. Knowing well the thought processes that can underlie anxiety disorders, Megan uses elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, ACT, and Narrative Therapy to help clients form the inner worlds they would like to create. When working with clients experiencing trauma and/or depression, Megan uses an Internal Family Systems approach to facilitate the healing of wounded selves.

During her 15-month internship at a public mental health clinic working with adults, Megan utilized an eclectic modality approach including elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Strengths-Based and Internal Family Systems. Megan is a recent graduate in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Antioch New England University and with an interest in treating trauma, Megan completed a certificate in trauma counseling. Trainings completed include those related to anxiety, sensorimotor therapy, trauma, polyvagal theory, and imposter syndrome.

Married for twenty-one years and with three wonderful daughters, Megan loves hiking, reading, practicing the piano, and spending time with her family and friends.

Megan is licensed in the state of Virginia (#0704014254) and is under the clinical supervision of LeeAnn Gumulauskas (Virginia license #0701008515).
